At GCS, we recognise the need to move progressively towards total sustainability and are committed to reducing our carbon footprint and use of non-sustainable resources. It is clear that any development must "meet the needs of the present, without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs". (The Brundtland Commission, 1987.)
There are two major ways to reduce negative human impact. One is by improving environmental management. Our approach to this was shown under “Environmental Sustainability” and is largely based on information gathered on environmental science and conservation biology. In terms of packaging, this may cause us to look at the sustainability of our material and energy sources and may lead to us using alternative sources which are at least renewable. However, we cannot do this overnight. The second approach is the management of human consumption of resources which is driven more by economic factors. This approach looks at influencing consumers and business to conserve and manage resources more effectively: to remove unnecessary waste, recover waste that can be reused or recycled. Some of these things can also take time to set up but the process can be started straight away and most of the actions can be initiated by ourselves within our Businesses. Many of them are things that we should be doing anyway as good management practices.
GCS is focusing on 3 different axes to achieve environmental sustainability:
We are constantly looking at right-weighting and innovative designs in order to reduce the carbon footprint of our closures and hence your finished products. GCS is already able to give you a detailed carbon footprint calculation for every product in our range.
GCS is committed to maximise the use of renewable energy (eg solar panels) and to reduce the energy and water consumption as well as overall process waste during our process (eg use of electrical injection machines). We also encourage our suppliers to have similar policies and prioritize our relationships with partners that are aligned on these targets (for secondary packaging and transport efficiency for example).
GCS is actively exploring the use of renewable as well as recyclable/recycled resins for the manufacture of our products. We are in the process of testing various renewable and biodegradable resins and we are working with potential suppliers to explore the possibility of obtaining appropriate levels of post-consumer recycled in future products.
Social Responsibility and Relationships
Through its Sustainability commitments, GCS takes its responsibilities to its stakeholders and partners and its Social Responsibilities to the people who work in our Businesses worldwide seriously. We are also conscious of the potential impact of our business activities on the environments in which we do business. As with all other aspects of how we do Business our aim is to continually improve what we do.
